Exploring the Western Trade Coast’s prized Conference Centre
I was contacted recently and asked if I’d like to take a tour of the AMC Jakovich Function Centre, and of course I said yes.
I had seen the signage but not realized exactly what it was, how big the Centre is and how impressive it is inside!
It is located just off Russell Road in Henderson.
So last Wednesday I arrived at the AMC Jakovich Function Centre just after mid-morning, and the first thing that struck me was how peaceful the entire precinct feels. You’re greeted by plenty of parking surrounded by pockets of bushland, so even though you’re right in the heart of the Australian Marine Complex, there’s a calmness that sets the tone before you even step inside.
Walking through the main entrance, I was met by a bright, welcoming foyer buzzing with quiet activity. A few people were gathered for meetings, others waiting for sessions to begin. It’s the kind of space that feels professional but not stuffy. Warm décor, natural light, and enough room that you don’t feel crowded. As I waited, I wandered around the foyer, noticing the easy access to the rooms upstairs, the boardrooms tucked neatly off to the side, and the small break-out areas perfect for quick chats or a pre-meeting coffee.
A few moments later I was greeted by the Venue Manager, Riaan who offered to show me around. And that’s when the real feel of the Conference Centre came to life.
Carnac Island Room – A presentation in full swing
Our first stop was the Carnac Island Room, and as we approached, I could hear the presenter speaking. I peeked in and the room was set up theatre-style with rows of chairs facing a large projection screen. A group was mid-way through a First Aid training presentation, and the facilitator was using the in-room AV with ease.
What really stood out was the layout. Along one side of the room, a beautifully arranged catering spread was set up on the sideboard. Fresh pastries and morning tea selections from La Mint Catering. Everyone had easy access to refreshments without interrupting the flow of the session. The room felt bright, spacious, and well-balanced, even with a group inside.
Garden Island Room – Light, airy and adaptable
Next, we moved to the Garden Island Room, which was empty at the time, giving me a perfect view of its setup possibilities. Southern-facing windows fill the room with soft natural light, giving it a warm, open feel. You can instantly imagine it hosting anything from a medium-sized workshop to a planning session or an industry seminar.
Riaan explained how the back wall can be opened to connect with the Carnac Island Room. It makes the space incredibly adaptable for large conferences with break-out areas or events that need multiple flow zones.
Lake Coogee Room – The showpiece
Then we headed to what is undeniably the star of the venue: the Lake Coogee Room.
The moment we stepped in, my eyes went straight to the wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. They flood the room with light and open onto a balcony that overlooks the beautiful Lake Coogee and is the ideal spot for a coffee break, a fresh-air reset between sessions, or even a sundowner at the end of the day.
Although the room wasn’t being used at that moment, it was easy to imagine it buzzing with energy: a full conference setup with 160 people in theatre-style seating, or round tables for a formal luncheon, or an industry forum with panel discussions. The room feels big without feeling overwhelming, and the balcony truly sets it apart.
Boardrooms – Quiet, polished and private
Downstairs, I was shown the two boardrooms, Thomas Peel and Jervoise Bay. Both offer private, polished settings, but each with its own personality.
As we made our way past the Thomas Peel Boardroom, I noticed a small group chatting just outside the door, clearly wrapping up a meeting. I happened to recognise one of them, so I stopped to say hello. They told me their company books the Thomas Peel Boardroom every month for their internal forums, a regular space for managers and team leads to come together without the distractions of the office. Apparently, it’s become their go-to spot because it’s quiet, private and “just easy.” We had a quick catch-up about how well the room works for them, then I left them to it and continued on with the tour.
A few steps away is the Jervoise Bay Boardroom, tucked behind reception. It’s smaller, more intimate, and perfect for interviews, consultant meetings, or last-minute bookings, especially since it can be hired by the hour.
Break-out spaces, function bar and those special little touches
One thing that surprised me was just how many break-out areas are built into the venue. Little seating zones, open foyers, and the upstairs function bar all give attendees space to regroup, mingle or step away for private conversations. The function bar area especially stood out, it’s licensed, flexible, and ideal for networking or end-of-day sundowners.
Finishing with La Mint Café – The perfect lunch stop
My favorite part…
We wrapped up the tour with lunch at La Mint Café, located right inside the Centre. By this point it was busy with workers from the AMC and visitors enjoying a late lunch. The smell of fresh coffee hit me first, followed by the sight of homemade pastries and generous plates being carried out.
I ordered lunch and immediately understood why La Mint Café is so loved. The food is fresh, well-priced, and full of flavour. It’s exactly what you want for a working lunch or a break between sessions. And for events, their catering options are a huge bonus; after seeing the morning tea setup earlier, I had no doubts about the quality.
Final Impressions
Walking back to my car, I realised if you’re looking for a corporate function venue, there’s absolutely no need to trek into Perth or Fremantle. Everything you need is right here at the AMC Jakovich Function Centre. It strikes that perfect balance between professional and comfortable, with polished facilities surrounded by calm bushland and those lovely light-filled rooms that make you actually want to stay for the day.
And honestly, whatever you’re planning, they can make it work. I’ve now seen everything from presentations to training sessions running smoothly, but they’re just as equipped to host AGMs, a range of corporate functions or even big industry forums. You can go fully catered or bring in your own team – the commercial kitchen is included in the hire, which is a massive bonus. Plus, being right in the middle of the Western Trade Coast makes it super convenient for anyone working across the precinct.
And before I forget — I can totally recommend the homestyle sausage rolls and the arancini from La Mint Café. Trust me, they’re worth the visit on their own.
